Georgia Telework Tax Credit: Up to $20,000 for Launching or Expanding a Telework Program

20 July 2010 No Comment

You may not know it, but tax season is upon us – telework tax credit season that is.  The Clean Air Campaign wants Georgia employers to know that now is the time to start thinking about applying for the Georgia Telework Tax Credit to get up to $20,000 for launching or expanding a telework program.

The Clean Air Campaign is your go-to source on all things telework in the state and has impacted more than 11,000 teleworkers since 2005.  The not-for-profit organization helped to establish this tax credit in 2006, but warns that the 2011 tax year may be the last chance employers get to take advantage of this break, as funding to continue the program has not yet been approved.

What are the benefits of a formal telework program?

Telework is an essential component of business continuity planning, and it increases productivity up to 20 percent, reduces absenteeism, improves recruitment and retention and saves on overhead costs anywhere between 25 to 90 percent. Companies are also eligible for the Georgia Telework Tax Credit for beginning or expanding a program.

What are the regional benefits?

Telework programs reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. It also creates wider employment and work opportunities, allowing companies to hire and retain the best talent. Improved regional mobility also generates economic growth.

What is the telework tax credit?

The Georgia Telework Tax Credit allows qualified employers to receive a tax credit for starting or expanding a formal telework program. Georgia businesses may be eligible for a tax credit for the expenses incurred to set-up their program, and the expenses incurred to enable each individual new teleworker.

How much money is available to businesses?

Up to $20,000 for costs related to program development and up to an additional $1,200 per new teleworker.

Who should apply?

Employers who will pay GA State income tax for 2011, and are starting or expanding a telework program.

When must employers apply?

In order to take the tax credit, applications must be submitted between September 1 and October 31, 2010.

If an employer already has a formal telework program but will be adding teleworkers during 2011, could they qualify for the tax credit for the new teleworkers?

Yes, employees that “begin to telework” in 2011 and meet the requirements in the statute will qualify for the credit.
