My initial inspiration for this blog post comes from my insanely creative friend Bonnie Forkner. This is a girl who sends me a handmade gift every holiday, did the “green wedding” before it was trendy and plans to open an eco-friendly bed and breakfast some day. Cleaner air for Glover Park

Marietta City Council at their July 8 regular meeting banned smoking at any time in Glover Park on the Marietta Square to protect visitors’ health. Council acted after hearing from citizens concerned about the effects of secondhand smoke at Glover Park concerts.
Marietta’s smoking ban says: “It shall be unlawful for any person to inhale, exhale, burn or carry any lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe, weed, plant or other combustible substance in any manner or form in Glover Park.”

GWINNETT COUNTY TAKES ENERGY STAR® CHALLENGE AND ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH EPA’S ENERGY STAR® PROGRAM

In a positive step toward reducing energy use, Gwinnett County has taken the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR Challenge and announced a fundamental commitment to protect the environment by becoming an ENERGY STAR Partner.
The ENERGY STAR Challenge, launched by EPA in March 2005, calls for an energy efficiency improvement of 10 percent or more for the more than five million commercial and industrial buildings in the United States. Suwanee Goes Green-er: Earns LEED Certification

The City of Suwanee’s new City Hall, opened in February, was designed to become the second public facility in Gwinnett County to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. And the community of 16,500 is well-known regionally for its award-winning open space initiative and the new parks it created. Green Chamber tour of Hurt Building June 16

Learn about how the historic Hurt Building was converted to be managed sustainably. The two-hour educational program will focus on how the building was turned into the first LEED EB office building inside the perimeter of Atlanta.
The program will also include a behind-the-scenes tour of the property.
Built in 1913, the Hurt Building is one of Atlanta’s earliest skyscrapers. The 18-story, 436,340 square-foot building incorporates classic architecture, modern amenities and sustainable management. SANDY SPRINGS CITY COUNCIL PASSES WATER CONSERVATION INCENTIVE PROGRAM

The City of Sandy Springs City Council unanimously voted to pass a new water conservation permit incentive program. The goal of the program is to value all water on a building site. Site planning and design should be based on the understanding that water is a valuable natural resource that should be used conservatively, cleaned and reused on-site.
“I am very pleased that the City of Sandy Springs is a leader in water conservation by providing incentives to builders when they incorporate water saving plumbing in construction,” said Mayor Eva Galambos. …
