Each year the National Association of Home Builders honors those who excel in green residential design, construction practices and outstanding green advocacy efforts through the National Green Building Awards.

The nation’s premier public health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has signed a two-year contract with Georgia Power to purchase renewable energy for its centers nationwide.
The purchase of more than 364,600 blocks of green energy, or 5 percent of the organization’s annual kilowatt-hour consumption, will make the CDC Georgia Power’s largest Green Energy customer.

Certified Green Professional Designations on the Rise

The green building trend is exploding as the National Association of Home Builders reports that the number of home builders, remodelers and other members of the real estate and construction industry who hold the Certified Green Professional (CGP) educational designation now tops 4,000.
The NAHB Research Center, which administers the National Green Building Certification program for new homes, developments and remodeling projects, is also reporting solid growth: More than 350 homes have been certified and there are 4,500 projects in the certification pipeline.

Cleaner air for Glover Park

Marietta City Council at their July 8 regular meeting banned smoking at any time in Glover Park on the Marietta Square to protect visitors’ health. Council acted after hearing from citizens concerned about the effects of secondhand smoke at Glover Park concerts.
Marietta’s smoking ban says: “It shall be unlawful for any person to inhale, exhale, burn or carry any lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe, weed, plant or other combustible substance in any manner or form in Glover Park.”

GWINNETT COUNTY TAKES ENERGY STAR® CHALLENGE AND ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH EPA’S ENERGY STAR® PROGRAM

In a positive step toward reducing energy use, Gwinnett County has taken the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR Challenge and announced a fundamental commitment to protect the environment by becoming an ENERGY STAR Partner.
The ENERGY STAR Challenge, launched by EPA in March 2005, calls for an energy efficiency improvement of 10 percent or more for the more than five million commercial and industrial buildings in the United States.
