Celebrating Southwest Atlanta’s Urban Forest A Family Urban Forestry Festival

13 March 2009 No Comment

Join the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA), and friends to celebrate southwest Atlanta’s incredible urban forest and its native wildlife.  Meet urban forestry professionals and community partners including Trees Atlanta, the US Forest Service, Georgia Forestry Commission, Atlanta Audubon Society, Chattahoochee Nature Center, and others.  The festival will feature educational and entertaining exhibits, presentations, hands-on activities, food, and special giveaways by NWF and its partners.

Festival goers will meet local wildlife, engage in forestry and wildlife games, and make fun crafts. They will learn new forestry and outdoors skills and discover the invasive plants in Atlanta’s neighborhoods and how to safely remove them.  Visitors will learn about Atlanta’s birds and the habitat and forest types that provide food, water, shelter and safe places for local and migratory wildlife. Groups and families will also explore the 26-acre beech tree forest with expert guides and visit educational skills stations set up along a trail leading into the forest.

The 4th Annual Urban Forestry Festival, “Celebrating Southwest Atlanta’s Urban Forests,” will be a day of family fun, learning, and community sharing.  Come explore and celebrate the wonders of Atlanta’s Urban Forests, and be amazed by the little known green treasures within I-285.

Partial funds for this festival were provided by the Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program administered by the Georgia Forestry Commission and the U.S. Forest Service More Kids in the Woods Program.
