Decatur Green Fest Presented by Bonterra Vineyards Promises Green Education, Music, Food and Fun!
The City of Decatur is proud to announce Decatur Green Fest, presented by Bonterra Vineyards, and hosted by the Dogwood Alliance, to be held on Saturday, May 2 from 3 pm until 9:30 pm. The event kicks off the annual Concert on the Square Series presented by Wachovia, and features a day of earth friendly family fun and music featuring Deep Blue Sun, with an evening concert presented by Half-Moon Outfitters at 7pm. Attendance is anticipated at 1,000 for the day and an additional 1,000 for the evening concert. Solar power for the concert will be provided by the sound company, Tree Leaf Music.
The Decatur Library will join in the celebration with a film series on April 30th, and green reading lists for kids and adults. Among the featured films will be “Recycled Life”, a documentary about life in a Guatemalan garbage dump and how an organization, Safe Passage, is working to improve the lives of the children who live there.
There will also be a display of Rain Barrels built by Rain Barrel Man and decorated by the students at Clairemont Elementary School which will be auctioned off on Saturday evening. Rain Barrel Man will be there to teach children of all ages how to make and decorate their own Rain Barrel.
In addition to music, the event promises a taste of local and organic food and sampling of Equal Exchange fair-trade items. Terrapin Beer Company, an event partner, and Bonterra Vineyards will be providing their tasty beverages. And for the first time, there will be an exhibition of artists working with recycled materials. Several green building professionals and other green educators will be present. The Decatur Cool City Coalition will lead a Teaching Tour of Green Buildings from 1-6pm.
This 3rd annual event is a benefit for the Dogwood Alliance and the Decatur Preservation Alliance. The Dogwood Alliance is the Southeast’s leader in efforts to bring together the voices of thousands of individuals to pursue win-win solutions that ensure the future of natural and native Southern forests, and create financial incentives for positive change by creating market demand for environmentally sound paper products. The Decatur Preservation Alliance is a non-profit citizen’s group whose mission is to connect the Decatur community through the preservation of its historic structures and green spaces. Incorporated in 2000 to save the Old Depot, the DPA’s current programs include the Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project, Woodlands Garden and the Decatur Cemetery.
