Environmental and Nature Summer Camps

There are quite a few Summer Camps that are hands-on, challenging and exciting for kids that want to explore our environment and nature. Check out some at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Autrey Mill’s Nature and Preserve Heritage Center and Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Camp Kingfisher.

Registration begins February 2, 2009
Enroll your child in a summer day camp full of discovery, adventure and nature exploration. Camp sessions include fun and educational activities in the Children’s Garden, Gardens Under Glass, children’s classroom and more. Each day will focus on different environmental themes and include a healthy snack. Children will be immersed in the natural world through stories, games, experiments and arts and crafts.

Programs
Half Day Sessions
Garden Explorers: ages 4 – 6 years
What is living in the Garden? Campers will find out as they explore the Garden and discover the plants and animals that live there. This session is a great introduction to the natural world for young, curious naturalists!

Full Day Sessions
Adventures in the Garden: ages 7 – 10 years
Campers will take a fun look at some of the weird and wild ways that plants and animals have adapted to their extreme environments. This exotic adventure introduces children to South American Rainforests, Aftican Deserts and Georgia’s own bogs and forest. Campers should come prepared to explore, dig in the dirt and play in the Garden.

Camp Fees
Half Day:  General public $175, Garden members $155
Full Day: General public $245, Garden members $215

Autrey Mill Nature Camp

Reptile Camp (June 1-5 and June 8-12) – Autrey Mill will be featuring reptiles in their first week of camp.  Reptiles are always a favorite subject of campers, and it is easy to understand why.  Each day of reptile camp will feature a live reptile encounter, nature hikes, and reptile related games and activities.

Bird Camp (June 15-19 and June 22-26) – During Bird Camp campers will learn to recognize some of the common birds of our area by sight and sound!  They also dissect owl pellets, create bird feeders, and learn about some of the dangers facing our feathered friends.

Creepy Crawlies Camp (July 6-10 and July 13-17) – Campers will have a fantastic time with insects, arachnids, and more during Creepy Crawly camp!  They will meet a variety of invertebrates up close and personal, as well as spend a lot of time in our forest searching for these peculiar creatures.  In addition to live animal encounters with these animals, campers will create invertebrate art and play ‘creepy’ games!

Wonderful Water Camp (July 20-24 and July 27-31) – Water Week is always a popular theme with our campers, and this year Autrey Mill decided to make it their grand finale!  Campers will enjoy exploring the creek and wetland, conduct interesting experiments with water, and learn about how important water is to a variety of animals from the world through live animal encounters.

Camp Kingfisher days are filled with nature, discovery, camaraderie and play creating an unforgettable adventure for each camper.

Their mission is to provide unique learning experiences focused on the Chattahoochee River that connect all people to the natural world and empower them to positively impact their local environments.

Camp Kingfisher carrys out its mission through hands-on environmental education programs and dynamic outdoor activities in a supervised, fun and stimulating setting annually serving over 800 metro Atlanta families (Kindergarten – 9th grades).
